Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) at Akron General in Ohio is a 24/7
facility where specialty Physicians diagnose and treat epilepsy.
This unit receives a combination of high acuity seizure patients
along with medical overflow. As an RN on this team, you will assist
these professionals and fellow nursing staff in caring for patients
of all ages. Your work will focus on performing routine and
intermediate Polysomnographic and Electroencephalographic tests and
assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care plans. This
unit offers a welcoming and supportive environment where you can
grow as a healthcare provider and make a difference in your
community. A caregiver in this position works nights from 7:00PM –
7:30AM, every other weekend and rotating holidays. A caregiver who
excels in this role will: - Complete ongoing assessments, recognize
significant changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.
- Develop and update measurable goals. - Involve the patient/family
(or designee) in developing a plan of care individualized to
patient cultural, religious and educational needs and serve as a
patient advocate. - Provide nursing care, medications and
treatments safely in accordance with the Standards of Safe Nursing
Practice and institutional policy. - Delegate tasks/assignments to
employees, serve as a resource person, recognize and acknowledge
peer accomplishments, and accept/receive constructive criticism. -
Maintain membership in professional organizations. - Perform
Polysomnograms and Electroencephalograms, provide technical
interpretations of sleeping disorder patterns and perform daily
troubleshooting and electroencephalograms checks using established
techniques. - Assist with basic waveform analysis or recording
waveforms and equipment assessments, recognize basic seizure
patterns and respond appropriately. - Review and document progress
of care and discharge goals with patient/family. - Communicate
information regarding patient plan of care, current outcomes and
acuity at shift report. - Communicate information in a timely
fashion to Director, Physician, or Nursing Coordinator regarding
changes in patient condition and patient care/unit issues. -
Participate in research activities. - Assist in orientation of
registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and other hospital
personnel. - Serve on committees within the Department of Nursing,
participate in nursing grand rounds presentations and remain aware
of activities of shared governance councils. - Complete mandatory
education and training to maintain organization and department
specific competencies and requirements, applicable
certification/licensure and BLS/ACLS Certifications. Minimum
qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: - Graduate
from an accredited school of Professional Nursing (ADN or BSN
program) - Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) -
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart
Association (AHA) Preferred qualifications for the ideal future
caregiver include: - Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) -
Epilepsy Monitoring Unit experience - Critical care experience Our

- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting
patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. -
