a designated Baby-Friendly birth facility, has a comprehensive team
of caregivers ready to meet the needs of mom and baby, including
physicians, nurses, anesthesia experts, neonatologists and
pregnancy specialists. Th is team focuses on delivering safe and
quality care, creating the best experience possible for patients,
supporting each patient's childbirth philosophy, keeping the
C-section rate low, encouraging kangaroo care, and providing
breastfeeding and lactation support. Akron General's New Life
Center is a Level III Perinatal Center, which means that it's
prepared for any type of delivery and need for babies, including an
on-site L evel III NICU. From routine deliveries to high-risk
pregnancies, parents have the reassurance that Akron General offers
the highest level of care in obstetrics. A caregiver in this
position works days 7:00a m - 7:30p m with on-call requirements. A
caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide direct nursing care.
- Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for a
given patient population.
- Assessments: complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in
patient condition and respond appropriately.
- Planning: develop and update goals, involve patients and
families in developing plans of care, coordinating the
interdisciplinary plan of care and serve as a patient advocate.
- Implementation: provide nursing care, administer treatments and
medication, and document.
- Evaluation: participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation
of patient/family outcomes, contribute to the improvement of care
and participate in the quality improvement process.
- Leadership/professional development: delegate
tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person/role model/mentor,
pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain
applicable certification/ licensure and obtain any required
certifications specific to the unit.
- Department-specific duties: complete admission assessments of
maternal and/or infant patients, inclusive of psychological,
educational and age-specific needs of patients/families,
communicate information in a timely fashion regarding changes in
patient condition and patient care/unit issues, perform Unit
Coordinator responsibilities as needed, serve on committees within
the Department of Nursing, participate in nursing grand round
presentation, incorporate the use of informatics tools, principles,
theories and practices in the safe and effective delivery of care,
complete all electronic and paper records related to patient care,
ensure JCAHO Core Measures related to nursing care are achieved,
and incorporate patient safety goals in daily practice. Minimum
qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Graduate from an accredited school of professional nursing.
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American
Heart Association (AHA).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification through the
American Heart Association (AHA) upon hire or within one year of
employment.
- Completion of Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) through the
American Academy of Pediatrics within six months of hire. Preferred
qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Our caregivers continue

- Requires full range of body motion including handling and
lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand
coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of
time.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular
hours.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally,
and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than
negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move
objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light
